HYPERTHYROIDISM

(Graves' Disease)

 Basic information

description

Hyperthyroidism means the thyroid gland is overactive and produces too much thyroid hormone. The most common form of hyperthyroidism is called Graves' disease. The thyroid hormone is used by the body to regulate metabolism (producing energy). Hyperthyroidism often affects adults between ages 20 and 50, mostly women.

FREQUENT SIGNS & SYMPTOMS

causes

Graves' disease is an autoimmune disorder. In these disorders, the immune system by mistake attacks the body itself in different ways. In Graves' disease, abnormal antibodies from the immune system cause the thyroid to produce more hormone. Other causes of hyperthyroidism may be due to disorders of the thyroid.
