Fainting is a sudden, temporary loss of consciousness due to a decrease in the supply of blood and oxygen to the brain. Fainting may be a symptom of a health problem or a one-time event. Syncope is the medical term for fainting.

A person will recover from simple fainting in 1 or 2 minutes. There are normally no long-term effects.
